Introduction.

What is a Design System?

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs

A Design System is a term for method bring flexibility, control, consistency to our workflow and ultimately to our publications.

By taking control of our content though the use of a Design System, not only does our content becomes enriched and more valuable but it speeds up and extends our workflow. Imagine the following…

  • Your next InDesign file is already set up with the correct size, page extent, logos, swatches, preferences and styles ready for you to design within.
  • An Editor making changes in a structured Word manuscript and those edits seamlessly syncing with your page layout.
  • A single, checked, print ready publication that can be reused and exported out to a range of accessible ebook formats.

The rather technical term for this approach is interoperability.

Interoperability – the ability of digital solutions to communicate with one another to share and process data.

All this is achievable today, by introducing a Design System to your publishing workflow!

What a Design System is NOT!

A design system is used to underpin how publications are set-up and structured but it does not dictate or restrict how the publication looks!

The use of a design system does directly enforce or restrict the use of any design elements of images, layout, fonts, colours etc.

However, the use of any such design elements from actual design can all be can saved and consistently applied by using a 'Design System Theme'.

A Design System Theme is a collection of the attributes and appearance applied to an underlying design system.

There can be as many themes as required, and each individual publication can have a different themes if so desired.
